Step-by-Step Guide to Buffing a Car

We've tried covering everything that we could, so you'll be able to follow the instructions below.

Step 1: Park in a Shady Area

Make sure you have your equipment set up and place your car in a shaded spot. If you've parked your car or driven outside into the heat for some time, allow your vehicle to cool down first.

It shouldn't be hot to the touch before you start any detailing work. In addition, the sun's radiation is capable of damaging some chemical bonds. It is not a good idea to let this happen while you work.

Step 2: Fully Wash Your Car

Get your car shampoo ready, along with a car wash mitt (or car-safe sponge) and a bucket. Your car needs to be cleaned prior to attempting to polish it.

  • Prepare the Car Shampoo. Mix the shampoo according to the directions in the container of water.

  • Wash the Car Thoroughly. Clean the entire car from the trunk to the hood. Do not rush this chore. Go into all the corners and crevices. Be sure to treat each one with care.

Be aware that the droppings of common birds, like pigeons, are acidic and could be destructive. It is recommended to pay particular attention to the areas that have been pooped on later.

  • Rinse and Dry. Clean your car until there is no soap remaining. Utilizing your towels (make certain they're suitable for paint), dry them off.

Step 3: Clay Bar After Washing

A clay bar is a great way to ensure that there isn't any dirt or grit remaining on the surface of your car. If left untreated, these types of substances may be crushed into the paint.

  • Prepare Clay Bar. Put on your gloves and prepare your clay bar. If it's large, cut it into small pieces to make it easier to handle. Press it until it's smooth and flexible.

  • Spray Clay Bar Lubricant. Make sure you target your vehicle in smaller sections, such as 2x2. It is recommended to start toward the front of the car because it's less muddy.

Apply the lubricant to the surface and also onto the clay bar itself.

  • Clay Bar Your Car. With a gentle side-to-side movement, rub it across the area. If you encounter resistance, spray more lubricant.

Make sure to check the bar frequently to make sure it's not covered with dirt. If it is, you can reshape the bar with your hands until the surface is clear.

Step 4: Re-Wash and Dry Your Car

When you're done, wash the vehicle. Rinse the vehicle as you did earlier, making sure that there is no soap residue left. Your vehicle must be completely dry before you start polishing. Take out your towels for cars or microfiber cloths, and make sure you are thorough.

Step 5: Set up Your Tool of Choice

We've included directions for each kind of device and instructions for hand-buffing.

  • High-Speed or Rotary Buffer. They're the most likely to ignite paint when misused. If you're not comfortable with it, have it set to low. If your device isn't cordless, then plug it in.

  • Random Orbital Buffer. Maintain the speed at a low level or a mid-high level if you've never had the chance to use one before. Connect the unit to ensure it's ready for use.

  • Manual Buffing. There's nothing else to be prepared, aside from your two hands. It's recommended to put on your gloves.

Step 6: Apply Buffing Compound

Apply the substance you've purchased according to the directions. Certain brands will require you to apply the compound to the pad and your vehicle pad itself. Follow the directions for your product.

Similar to using clay bars, you'll only be treating small portions at a time.

Step 7: Spread the Compound Evenly

When you're working with a device, do not turn it on immediately. Use the pad on the surface of your vehicle to spread the compound equally.

Step 8: Buff Your Car

The most important thing to do an excellent job of buffing is to have a steady hand and regular movements. It is important to avoid being in one place for excessively long or applying excessive pressure.

  • Using a Motorized Buffer. Slide the pad across the surface that you're buffing using circular movements. You don't have to apply all of your force to pull the pad downwards, particularly with a fast model.
